Attorney

Attorney Christopher Likens has been practicing elder law since before it was known as such. In high school, he worked for a small firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, in administration. During that time, clients used their lawyers as a community resource. For instance, when widows needed someone to repair things, they typically called their lawyers. Mr. Likens would sit with the widows while the repairperson was in the house.

“I really liked this idea that the lawyer was the community resource person who helped the family,” Mr. Likens said.

After attending law school, Mr. Likens formed his elder law practice on this community resource principle. He is more than just a document drafter, he works with each family on a personal level. As elder law has grown over the past two decades in Sarasota, Florida — shifting and changing with the Medicaid system — so has Mr. Likens.

“There is a lot of living to do between retirement and the passing of assets on to the next generation,” Mr. Likens said. “My practice is all about discovering how can we make that process as smooth as possible.”
